**Mumbai, India** – Kangana Ranaut’s much-anticipated film “Emergency,” a biopic portraying Indira Gandhi during the 1975 Indian Emergency, has severely underperformed at the box office, despite a relatively strong opening. While marking the actor-turned-politician’s biggest Hindi film opening post-COVID, the film’s five-day total stands at a disappointing ₹12.40 crore domestically and ₹14.50 crore worldwide, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.
The film, which faced numerous delays and protests in several states, including Punjab where screenings were disrupted on its release day (January 17th), saw a drastic drop in collections. After a ₹2.5 crore opening day, the film’s earnings plummeted to a mere ₹1 crore on Tuesday, representing a 75.29% decline from Monday’s already low ₹1.05 crore. The film also failed to release in Bangladesh due to political tensions between the two countries.
While Manikarnika Films, the production house, reported a higher figure of ₹13.53 crore for the first four days, independent trackers paint a much bleaker picture. Despite featuring a star-studded cast including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and the late Satish Kaushik, “Emergency” has failed to resonate with audiences, making it a significant box office flop. The film’s struggles highlight the challenges of navigating political controversies and widespread protests in the Indian film industry.
