Tue Jan 21 04:12:07 UTC 2025: ## 6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Southern Taiwan
**TAIPEI, Taiwan –** A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck southern Taiwan early Tuesday, causing minor injuries and some structural damage but no fatalities, according to initial reports. The quake, which hit at 12:17 a.m. local time, was centered 38 kilometers southeast of Chiayi County Hall at a depth of 10 kilometers, as reported by Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration. The U.S. Geological Survey registered the quake at a magnitude of 6.
Twenty-seven people sustained minor injuries, with six—including a one-month-old infant—rescued from a collapsed house in Tainan’s Nanxi district. The Zhuwei bridge on a provincial highway also sustained damage. Three individuals were safely rescued from trapped elevators in Tainan and Chiayi City. A fire at a Chiayi printing factory, ignited by the quake, was quickly extinguished.
While rescue efforts continue and damage assessments are underway, authorities have reported no deaths. The earthquake follows a magnitude 7.4 quake that hit Hualien in April 2024, resulting in significant casualties. Taiwan’s location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” makes it highly susceptible to seismic activity.
