Mon Jan 20 04:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Vodafone Idea Shares Surge on AGR Dues Waiver Rumours
**Mumbai, January 20** – Vodafone Idea’s share price skyrocketed by as much as 10% on Monday, hitting its upper circuit limit at ₹10.03, fueled by reports suggesting the Indian government is considering a significant reduction of telecom companies’ Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues.
The surge follows an Economic Times report indicating the government is exploring a proposal to waive 50% of the interest and 100% of penalties and interest on penalties associated with AGR dues. These dues, levied after a 2019 Supreme Court ruling, have placed a substantial burden on telecom operators like Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel.
This positive market reaction comes as Vodafone Idea’s AGR actually increased by 4.39% to ₹7,836.98 crore in the July-September 2024 quarter, according to company figures. Overall, the telecom sector saw a 10.5% year-on-year rise in gross revenue, driven largely by recent tariff hikes.
The share price increase builds on a five-day winning streak, with the stock jumping almost 30% since January 14. The rally is further amplified by recent preferential share issuances to Omega Telecom Holdings Private Limited and Usha Martin Telematics Limited, significantly increasing their stakes in the company.
While Vodafone Idea shares reached a 52-week high of ₹19.15 in June, they subsequently fell to a low of ₹6.60 in November. Monday’s surge marks a significant turnaround, though investors are cautioned to consult financial experts before making any investment decisions based on this news.
