NEW YORK/NEW JERSEY – A major winter storm is pummeling parts of New York and New Jersey, delivering significantly higher snowfall than initially predicted in some areas. Snow totals of 3-5 inches are expected for New York City, but the Hudson Valley and northern New Jersey are experiencing much heavier accumulation, with some areas potentially receiving over a foot of snow.
Inland areas of New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut are under winter storm warnings, while New York City, Long Island, and coastal areas are under a winter weather advisory. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency on Saturday, urging residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
While the MTA is monitoring conditions, no service changes have been announced as of yet. However, with temperatures plummeting below freezing and expected to remain in the teens and twenties for several days, icy roads and hazardous travel conditions are anticipated, especially Monday morning. The coldest air of the season is expected to arrive mid-week, with sub-zero wind chills possible. The National Weather Service is urging residents to prepare for potentially dangerous conditions.
