**LOS ANGELES** – The UFC 311 main event has been dramatically altered just hours before the pay-per-view event was set to begin. Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev will now defend his title against Renato Moicano, after challenger Arman Tsarukyan was forced to withdraw due to a back injury.
Tsarukyan, who was on track to make weight, reported significant back pain, prompting his withdrawal. In a statement, a disappointed Tsarukyan expressed regret and thanked the UFC for their understanding. He vowed to return to compete for the championship in the future.
UFC CEO Dana White announced the change during Friday’s official weigh-ins. Stepping in to face Makhachev is Moicano, originally scheduled to fight Beneil Dariush on the undercard. Dariush confirmed via Instagram that he is no longer on the card.
Makhachev, unfazed by the late change, stated that champions don’t choose their opponents and that he is prepared to fight anyone who can make weight. Moicano, currently on a four-fight win streak and ranked #10 in the lightweight division, represents a significant challenge for the champion. The fight will proceed as scheduled at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood.
