Sun Jan 19 14:02:19 UTC 2025: ## TikTok Shuts Down in US Amidst Presidential Uncertainty
**Washington, D.C.** – TikTok went dark in the United States late Saturday night, fulfilling a looming ban enacted last April over national security concerns. The app, along with other ByteDance-owned platforms like CapCut and Lemon8, disappeared from app stores and became inaccessible to American users. This action affects an estimated 170 million users.
The sudden shutdown, however, may be temporary. President-elect Donald Trump announced he will “most likely” delay the ban for 90 days upon assuming office on Monday. Trump, who has publicly voiced support for saving TikTok, suggested he might announce this delay on his first day. This potential reversal follows a Supreme Court ruling upholding the ban on Friday.
The ban, passed with bipartisan support in Congress, stems from concerns about TikTok’s Chinese ownership. While a Pew Research Center survey showed roughly half of Americans supported the ban, it remains unpopular among younger demographics.
Despite the outgoing Biden administration’s apparent intention to defer enforcement to the incoming Trump administration, critical service providers, including Apple, expressed concerns about potential penalties for non-compliance, leading TikTok to proactively shut down. Apple confirmed its removal of the app from its App Store was due to the ban, though it will remain accessible for existing users.
Several entities have submitted bids to acquire TikTok’s US operations, including groups led by Frank McCourt and Kevin O’Leary. However, ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, has consistently resisted selling. The company’s proprietary algorithm, a key to its success, is a major hurdle in any sale negotiation.
While Trump could temporarily halt enforcement, he cannot unilaterally overturn the law. A 90-day delay would provide time to negotiate a sale to a US-based entity, but this remains uncertain. The longer-term solution would involve either a new law reversing the ban or a successful sale of the US operations, neither of which is guaranteed. The situation leaves TikTok’s future in the US hanging in the balance.
