Sun Jan 19 14:02:22 UTC 2025: **TikTok Ban Takes Effect, Millions of US Users Locked Out**

NEW YORK – A nationwide ban on TikTok went into effect Saturday, plunging millions of US users into a digital blackout. The immensely popular video-sharing app was removed from major app stores, including Apple’s and Google’s, and users attempting to access the app received a message stating its unavailability due to the new law.

The ban, part of a federal law passed in April citing national security concerns over TikTok’s Chinese ownership (ByteDance), required the company to sever ties with the app by Sunday or face a complete shutdown. The Supreme Court upheld the law Friday, rejecting TikTok’s First Amendment challenge.

While the law doesn’t explicitly mandate TikTok’s removal, the company proactively blocked US access, possibly due to the loss of support from tech providers who are subject to hefty fines for continuing to host the app. The app remains installed on users’ devices, but cannot be redownloaded or reinstalled.

President-elect Donald Trump, who will be sworn in on Monday, hinted at a potential 90-day extension to allow for a possible sale or alternative solution. TikTok CEO Shou Chew expressed gratitude for Trump’s stated commitment to finding a solution and thanked him for his “strong stand for the first amendment.” Chew is reportedly attending Trump’s inauguration.

The ban has sparked outrage in China, with critics accusing the US of suppressing free speech. However, the US government maintains that the ban is necessary to protect against potential data breaches and algorithmic manipulation by the Chinese government. No evidence of such activity has been publicly released.

The situation remains fluid, with several investors, including a consortium involving Kevin O’Leary and a proposal from AI startup Perplexity AI, expressing interest in acquiring parts of the US operation. ByteDance, however, has previously stated its unwillingness to sell TikTok. The coming days will determine the future of TikTok’s presence in the United States.
