**CHENNAI, INDIA – January 18, 2025** – Oxford University Press (OUP) and the Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation (TNTESC) announced a significant partnership today to translate the works of twelve prominent Tamil authors into English. This initiative aims to bring Tamil literature to a global audience, capitalizing on the success of the Chennai International Book Fair and a growing interest in promoting Tamil language and culture internationally.
The collaboration will see OUP revive its Indian Language Translations Programme, commissioning new translations and reprinting existing works. The selection includes both established and emerging authors, such as Ambai, Imayam, and Chudamani, covering a wide range of genres. Notable titles slated for translation include “In a Forest A Deer and Other stories” by Ambai and “Seeing in the Dark” by Chudamani. The project also encompasses a reader on Subramaniya Bharathi and an anthology of 35 Tamil women writers.
Sharmila Guha, Head of Dictionaries, Higher Education, Academic and Trade at OUP India, highlighted the importance of the partnership in expanding the reach of Tamil literature. T Sankara Saravanan, Joint Director (Translation) at TNTESC, explained that this collaboration simplifies the translation process, facilitating the subsequent translation of these works into other European languages. The initiative represents a strategic move to make Tamil literature more accessible to international readers and researchers.
