Sun Jan 19 16:50:00 UTC 2025: **Menendez Brothers’ Resentencing Hearing Postponed Due to LA Wildfires**
LOS ANGELES, CA – The hearing to determine whether Erik and Lyle Menendez, convicted of murdering their parents in 1989, will be resentenced has been postponed until March 20th due to the devastating wildfires currently impacting the Los Angeles region.
The hearing, originally scheduled for later this month, was delayed by Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman. This marks the second postponement since Hochman assumed office in November, succeeding George Gascón who had recommended the brothers be resentenced and released on parole. Hochman, who campaigned on a tougher-on-crime platform, stated he needs more time to review the case before deciding whether to support resentencing.
The Menendez brothers are currently serving life sentences without the possibility of parole. Their 1996 convictions followed a highly publicized trial, where the defense argued self-defense due to alleged years of abuse by their father. The prosecution countered that the motive was financial gain.
While the focus remains on the ongoing wildfire crisis – which has claimed at least 27 lives and destroyed numerous communities – Hochman’s office continues its work, recently filing arson charges against six individuals suspected of starting fires amidst the devastation. The DA is also actively pursuing looters, arsonists, and those attempting to exploit the emergency situation.
