**GAZA CITY, PALESTINE** – A long-awaited ceasefire between Israel and Hamas went into effect on Sunday, bringing a tentative end to 15 months of devastating conflict that has left Gaza in ruins and claimed tens of thousands of lives. The announcement was met with a mix of jubilation and grief across the besieged territory.
Thousands of Palestinians poured into the streets, some celebrating the end of hostilities, others visiting the graves of loved ones lost in the fighting. Many rushed to return to their homes, now largely destroyed. The ceasefire, however, was delayed by nearly three hours, during which Israeli strikes killed at least 13 Palestinians, according to the Palestinian Civil Emergency Service.
While Hamas fighters were celebrated by cheering crowds in cities like Khan Younis, a palpable sense of loss and exhaustion permeated the celebrations. Aya, a displaced woman from Gaza City, described the feeling as finding “water after being lost in the desert for 15 months.” She expressed hope of returning to her damaged home, relieved that the “nightmare of death and starvation” was over.
Others, like Ahmed Abu Ayham, 40, also displaced from Gaza City, expressed deep sorrow. He described the destruction in his hometown as “dreadful” and stated that while the ceasefire spared further lives, it was no time for celebration, adding, “We are in pain, deep pain, and it is time that we hug one another and cry.”
The conflict, which began with a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis, according to Israeli authorities, and nearly 47,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza-based health officials. The Israeli response has left much of Gaza in ruins.
While the ceasefire offers a respite, the long road to recovery remains. The scale of destruction and loss leaves many Gazans with a sense of profound grief, even amidst the relief of ending the active fighting. The future remains uncertain, but for now, a fragile peace has settled over Gaza.
