**Erode, Tamil Nadu, January 18, 2025** – Scrutiny of nominations for the upcoming Erode (East) Assembly by-election concluded today, with 55 candidates cleared to contest and three rejected. The by-election, scheduled for February 5th, was necessitated by the death of sitting Congress MLA E.V.K.S. Elangovan.

A total of 65 nominations were initially filed by 58 candidates. The Returning Officer and Corporation Commissioner, N. Manish, oversaw the scrutiny process, which rejected the nominations of two substitute candidates (DMK and Naam Tamilar Katchi) and one independent candidate. The process was monitored by General Observer Ajay Kumar Gupta.

The nominations can be withdrawn until January 20th, after which symbols will be allocated, and the final list of candidates released. The Naam Tamilar Katchi candidate’s request for the ‘mike’ symbol is pending a response from the Election Commission. The candidate’s alternative preference, ‘sugarcane farmer’, is already allocated.

The AIADMK and BJP boycotted the by-election. Key contenders include V.C. Chandhirakumar (DMK) and M.K. Seethalakshmi (Naam Tamilar Katchi).
