**Hyderabad, January 19, 2025** – A one-day fact-checking workshop, organized by the Confederation of Voluntary Associations (COVA) – Peace Network, equipped community volunteers in Telangana with the skills to combat the spread of misinformation. The workshop, led by experts from organizations like Factly and EnLeap XP Canada, focused on identifying and debunking fake news across various sectors, including politics, religion, finance, and health.
Participants learned practical techniques for verifying information, including image verification and utilizing fact-checking tools. They worked in teams to analyze real-world examples of misinformation and developed strategies for future interventions, such as establishing alert systems and community support networks. The workshop highlighted the serious consequences of fake news, including the potential for inciting violence, fraud, and even loss of life.
According to Mazher Hussian, executive director of COVA, the training emphasized the crucial role community leaders play in countering the spread of misinformation, a task not solely the responsibility of media professionals. Participants noted a tendency for individuals to believe fake news aligning with their pre-existing biases. The workshop aimed to empower volunteers to become active participants in safeguarding their communities from the harmful effects of fake news.
