**Mumbai, India –** A Bangladeshi national, Shariful Islam Shehzad, has been arrested for allegedly breaking into the Mumbai home of Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan and attacking him and his staff. Shehzad, who had been living in India illegally under the alias Bijoy Das, was apprehended after a city-wide manhunt involving 30 police teams.
The incident occurred late Wednesday night when Shehzad allegedly gained entry to Saif Ali Khan’s Bandra residence, using the rear staircase and air-conditioning ducts. A nanny, Eliyama Philip, first encountered the intruder and was injured during a struggle. Shehzad then confronted Saif Ali Khan, who sustained six stab wounds, one near his spine, requiring hospitalization at Lilavati Hospital. He is now recovering.
Police tracked Shehzad using CCTV footage that captured him leaving the building after the attack. Further investigation, aided by local intelligence and tracking of his phone, led officers to a rented accommodation in Worli and ultimately to his hiding place in a Thane thicket.
During questioning, Shehzad claimed he didn’t know whose home he was burglarizing and was motivated by unemployment and a desire for a large sum of money – reportedly demanding one crore rupees from the nanny. However, police suspect a premeditated robbery. They are considering a recreation of the crime scene with the accused. No Indian identification documents were found on Shehzad, confirming his illegal status in the country.
