Sat Jan 18 04:53:09 UTC 2025: ## Brazil’s Swift Action Against Bolsonaro Contrasts Sharply with US Response to Trump

**Rio de Janeiro, January 18, 2025** – The contrasting responses of Brazil and the United States to the challenges posed by right-wing populist leaders Jair Bolsonaro and Donald Trump respectively, highlight stark differences in their institutional approaches to safeguarding democracy. While Brazil swiftly barred Bolsonaro from holding office until 2030 following his attempts to undermine the electoral process, the US response to Trump’s actions was significantly slower and less decisive.

Bolsonaro, like Trump, cast doubt on the legitimacy of the election results and incited supporters to riot in the capital. However, Brazil’s constitution, drafted in the aftermath of a military dictatorship, provided the mechanisms to swiftly remove Bolsonaro from contention. The electoral authority, empowered to act nationwide, barred him from running again until 2030, citing abuse of power and the dissemination of unfounded doubts about the electronic voting system. This action was praised by Justice Edson Fachin as demonstrating the robustness of Brazil’s democracy. Furthermore, key political figures across the spectrum endorsed the election results.

In contrast, the US lacked similarly effective constitutional mechanisms, leading to a delayed and ultimately less impactful response. While a special counsel was appointed to investigate Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election, prosecution was deemed unlikely given Trump’s return to the White House.

Both countries, however, showed a unified front in prosecuting rank-and-file supporters involved in the respective uprisings. Brazil has held 898 individuals criminally responsible for the January 8th riot, while over 1,500 individuals involved in the January 6th Capitol insurrection face federal charges in the US.

Bolsonaro, despite his ineligibility, maintains his intention to run for president in 2026, and polls suggest he remains a strong contender if allowed. His ongoing legal battles in the Brazilian Supreme Court could further extend his banishment from office and potentially lead to imprisonment. He denies all wrongdoing and accuses the court of political persecution. The contrasting fates of Bolsonaro and Trump underscore the crucial role of strong constitutional frameworks and decisive institutional action in safeguarding democratic processes.
