Sat Jan 18 15:15:29 UTC 2025: **Chennai Marriage Halls Implement Strict Cancellation Policy**

CHENNAI, January 18, 2025 – Tamil Nadu’s marriage hall industry has implemented a standardized booking and cancellation policy to address increasing legal disputes. The new guidelines, developed by the Tamil Nadu All Kalyana Mandapam Owners Association, affect approximately 7,500 of the state’s 10,000 registered halls.

The policy mandates a 50% advance payment upon booking. Cancellations within five days incur a ₹5,000 penalty; cancellations within 20 days result in the forfeiture of 75% of the advance. Cancellations beyond 20 days require full payment of the hall rental.

Association president A. John Amalrajan explained that the strict policy is necessary due to the limited number of auspicious wedding dates (45 muhurthams annually) and the financial burden of frequent cancellations. He cited various reasons for cancellations, including family deaths, couples opting for destination weddings, and broken engagements.

The new policy also requires Aadhaar card copies from both sets of parents and the couple to prevent child marriages and bigamous unions. This measure, Mr. Amalrajan stated, is also in line with local body regulations and protects hall owners from potential legal issues. The association will ensure all members display the new guidelines and obtain customer agreement.
