**Kolkata, India** – Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, was found guilty today by a local court. The verdict, delivered nearly two months after an in-camera trial began in November, comes over 160 days after the August 9th crime sparked nationwide outrage and protests.
Roy, a former Kolkata Police civic volunteer, was convicted under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to rape, murder, and causing death. He pleaded not guilty, claiming he was framed and alleging an IPS officer possessed key information. He will be sentenced on Monday at 12:30 pm.
Judge Anirban Das, of the Sealdah court, acknowledged Roy’s claims and promised to hear him before sentencing. The judge also criticized certain actions of police and hospital authorities, including the head of department, medical superintendent, and principal, for creating confusion during the investigation.
The case, which led to widespread protests by junior doctors demanding justice and improved hospital security, had drawn significant criticism of the West Bengal government’s handling of the investigation.
