Sat Jan 18 14:53:06 UTC 2025: **Namakkal Egg Prices Plummet, Leaving Poultry Farmers in the Red**

NAMAKKAL, Tamil Nadu, January 18, 2025 – Egg prices in Namakkal, a major poultry hub in Tamil Nadu, have plummeted in recent weeks, leaving farmers facing significant losses. The price per egg dropped from ₹5.90 in early December to ₹4.80 on Saturday, a reduction of ₹1.10. This sharp decline follows a period of record-high prices in December, reaching ₹5.90 at the wholesale level and ₹6.50-₹7 at retail.

The drastic price fall is attributed to a combination of factors. Increased production costs, coupled with the development of poultry farms in other states, has led to a surplus in the market. Namakkal’s poultry industry, which boasts over 1,100 farms and seven crore birds producing around six crore eggs daily, supplies eggs across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, North India, and even internationally. The industry also contributes significantly to the state’s noon meal scheme.

Vangli Subramaniam, Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Egg Poultry Farmers Marketing Society, highlighted the issue. He stated that the production cost per egg has reached ₹5, making the current procurement price unprofitable. Furthermore, he criticized farmers for selling below the price set by the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC), contributing to their losses while retail prices remain high. Subramaniam urged farmers to adhere to the NECC’s recommended price to mitigate losses.
