Thu Jan 16 19:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Mets Explore Vlad Jr. Trade, But Deal Remains Unlikely

**NEW YORK, NY** – With negotiations stalled with star first baseman Pete Alonso, the New York Mets have reportedly explored the possibility of acquiring Toronto Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. However, sources suggest the likelihood of a trade remains slim.

SNY’s Andy Martino reported that the Mets have contacted the Blue Jays regarding Guerrero, but characterized the potential deal as “fantasy baseball.” Guerrero, a two-time Silver Slugger, is entering the final year of his contract and hasn’t agreed to a long-term extension with Toronto. He set a spring training deadline for a new deal, failing which he’s expected to be traded before free agency next winter.

Reports suggest Guerrero turned down a $340 million offer from the Blue Jays and is seeking a contract potentially exceeding $400 million. This high price tag, coupled with the Blue Jays’ historically conservative approach to contracts, makes a deal less likely in the near future. TSN’s Scott Mitchell expressed skepticism that the Blue Jays would meet Guerrero’s demands.

The Mets’ interest in Guerrero stems from the uncertainty surrounding Alonso’s contract. Should negotiations fail, the Mets may have to rely on internal options such as Brett Baty at third base and Mark Vientos at first.

While the Mets have made an inquiry, the high cost and potential for only a short-term acquisition before Guerrero hits free agency make a trade seem improbable at this time. The team may instead have to explore alternative solutions within their current roster.
