Thu Jan 16 11:12:49 UTC 2025: ## UK Greenlights First Commercial Vertical Rocket Launch, Reviving Space Ambitions

**London, UK** – The UK has granted its first ever licence for a vertical rocket launch, marking a significant step forward for the nation’s burgeoning space industry. German company Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) has received permission to launch its 30-meter rocket from SaxaVord Spaceport in the Shetland Islands, potentially as early as the third quarter of this year.

This approval follows a setback two years ago when a horizontal launch attempt in Cornwall failed. A successful vertical launch would revitalize the UK space sector, which employs over 45,000 people and boasts a strong satellite manufacturing base.

Aviation Minister Mike Kane hailed the decision as a “landmark moment,” bringing the UK closer to its first commercial vertical space launch. However, the CAA emphasized that several conditions must be met before launch, including securing insurance and finalizing international agreements. The authority will continue safety monitoring in the coming months. The launch is expected to pave the way for regular commercial space missions from European soil.
