Thu Jan 16 17:54:06 UTC 2025: ## Trudeau Announces He Will Not Seek Re-election

**Ottawa, ON** – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shocked the nation today by announcing he will not be seeking re-election in October’s federal election. The announcement follows Trudeau’s declaration last week that he would step down as Prime Minister once the Liberal Party selects a new leader.

“In terms of my own decisions, I will not be running in the upcoming election,” Trudeau stated during a press conference in Ottawa. He will, however, remain Prime Minister until the party chooses his successor in March.

Trudeau’s decision comes after nearly nine years in office and amidst growing pressure from both the opposition and within his own party. The recent resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland further intensified calls for his departure. He reiterated his intention to resign as party leader and Prime Minister following a competitive leadership race.

The race to replace Trudeau is already heating up, with several prominent Liberals expected to contend for the top spot. Potential candidates have until January 23rd to register, and the new Liberal leader will be announced on March 9th. Former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney and former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland are considered frontrunners.

While Trudeau’s future plans remain unclear – “As to what I might be doing later, I honestly haven’t had much time to think about that at all,” he admitted – he emphasized his commitment to fulfilling his current duties, including navigating ongoing international challenges such as responding to US tariff threats. He will continue to serve as a Member of Parliament until the October election, but will vacate his seat if he doesn’t win re-election.
