Thu Jan 16 22:45:26 UTC 2025: ## Bande Mataram’s Coverage Reveals Forgotten Aspects of V.O. Chidambaram’s Legacy

**Chennai, January 17, 2025** – New research has unearthed compelling evidence highlighting the national prominence of V.O. Chidambaram (VOC), a pivotal figure in India’s freedom struggle, through the pages of the early 20th-century nationalist newspaper *Bande Mataram*. A recent study by Y. Manikandan, Head of the Department of Tamil Language at the University of Madras, reveals that *Bande Mataram*, published by Bipin Chandra Pal and Sri Aurobindo, featured VOC’s photograph on its front page on April 26, 1908.

This discovery, made while examining archived copies at Teen Murti Bhavan in Delhi, sheds light on a largely overlooked aspect of VOC’s impact. The photograph, published between his arrest in March and his sentencing to a double life term in July 1908, underscores the national significance attributed to his defiance of the British Empire and the subsequent Tirunelveli revolt. Manikandan notes that VOC was the only South Indian leader among 24 featured in a 1909 portrait by Sridhar Vaman Nagarkar.

*Bande Mataram’s* extensive coverage extends beyond this single image. The newspaper meticulously documented the Swadeshi movement in Tamil Nadu, giving considerable space to VOC’s speeches and activities, including the launch of the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company. The paper also highlighted a major nationalist meeting in Madras in January 1908, which *Bande Mataram* dubbed “The Triumph of Nationalism in Madras,” and a subsequent mass gathering on Marina Beach in March 1907, showcasing the widespread support for the Swadeshi movement.

The research further reveals *Bande Mataram’s* coverage of other key figures in the Tamil Nadu freedom movement, such as Subramania Bharathi, whose work was also regularly featured. This detailed reporting paints a vivid picture of the widespread nationalist fervor in Tamil Nadu during this critical period, a narrative often overlooked in broader historical accounts of the Indian independence movement. The findings underscore the crucial role of regional movements in the larger national struggle for freedom.
