Thu Jan 16 10:37:13 UTC 2025: ## Former Army Chief V.K. Singh Sworn in as Mizoram Governor

**Aizawl, Mizoram –** General (retired) V.K. Singh was sworn in as the 25th Governor of Mizoram on Thursday, January 15, 2024. The ceremony, held at Raj Bhavan in Aizawl, was attended by prominent state officials including Chief Minister Lalduhoma and former Chief Ministers Zoramthanga and Lal Thanhawla. Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi of the Gauhati High Court administered the oath.

Gen. Singh, who served as India’s 24th Chief of Army Staff and as a Minister under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, replaces Hari Babu Kambhampati, who has assumed the governorship of Odisha. His appointment is seen as strategically significant given Mizoram’s borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, both currently experiencing internal conflict.

Mizoram currently hosts over 30,000 refugees fleeing violence in Myanmar and Bangladesh. The state also faces challenges related to drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and the illegal trade of exotic animals, often originating from Myanmar and transiting through Mizoram. The state shares a 510 km border with Myanmar and a 318 km border with Bangladesh.
