**Chennai, January 16, 2025** – A new temple dedicated to the renowned Tamil poet Tiruvalluvar and his wife Vasuki will be constructed in Mylapore, Chennai, at a cost of ₹19 crore. The temple, replacing an existing brick and mortar structure, will be built using rough-cut granite and is expected to be completed within two years.
The design, entrusted to Santhanakrishnan Sthapathi, will feature a single elevated structure resembling those found in Hampi. It will incorporate a chariot-like design, pulled by elephants, and include a sanctum sanctorum and prakara mandapam. The vimana above the garbhagriha will be three-tiered, with a two-tiered vimana for Vasuki’s shrine. Existing statues of the poet’s parents under an Iluppai tree will be renovated.
Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments, P.K. Sekarbabu, stated that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is eager for swift completion and will lay the foundation stone by the end of this month. Further enhancements include a golden lotus pond, reminiscent of the pottraamarai tank at Madurai’s Meenakshi Amman temple, and the installation of statues of Avvaiyar, a Pandia King, and Sangam-era poets. Idols of Sri Ekambareswarar, Kamakshi Amman, and Karumariamman will also undergo renovation, and a mandapam featuring Thirukkural couplets will be added. Parking facilities will also be created.
