Thu Jan 16 01:29:49 UTC 2025: ## Delhi Air Quality Deteriorates Despite Rainfall; Stricter Pollution Curbs Reimposed
**New Delhi, January 16, 2025** – Overnight rain in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) provided temporary respite, slightly improving air quality and raising temperatures. However, the air quality index (AQI) quickly deteriorated, reaching a “very poor” 356 on Thursday, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) reimposed stricter pollution control measures under GRAP-3 and GRAP-4 on Wednesday in response to the worsening conditions. The AQI, which was 275 on January 14th, spiked to 386 on January 15th due to dense fog, low temperatures, and poor ventilation. By 6 PM on January 15th, the AQI had climbed to 396, with predictions of it exceeding 400.
In response to the deteriorating air quality, the Delhi government’s Directorate of Education mandated a hybrid learning model for students up to classes IX and XI. The ongoing cold wave is exacerbating the air pollution problem. Authorities reported no instances of flooding or waterlogging despite the rainfall.
