**Mumbai, January 16, 2025** – The stabbing of actor Saif Ali Khan during a home invasion has ignited a fierce debate over law and order in Mumbai, with opposition parties and film personalities criticizing the state government’s handling of the situation.
While Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis insisted that Mumbai remains the safest megacity in India and that the incident should not tarnish its image, opposition leaders have strongly condemned the attack and questioned the effectiveness of the Mumbai Police.
Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi questioned the safety of citizens if celebrities are vulnerable, citing the attack on Saif Ali Khan as well as the recent murder of former minister Baba Siddique and the shooting outside Salman Khan’s home – all in the upscale Bandra neighborhood. She alleged a deliberate attempt to undermine Mumbai by targeting prominent figures.
Aaditya Thackeray, also of the Shiv Sena (UBT), echoed these concerns, stating that the incident highlighted the “shambles” of law and order under the BJP-led government. He cited other incidents, including a sarpanch murder in Beed and a custodial death in Parbhani, as evidence of the government’s failure to curb crime. Similar sentiments were expressed by NCP and Congress leaders.
Several film personalities voiced their anxieties. Actress Pooja Bhatt expressed feeling “unsafe” for the first time in Mumbai, calling for increased police presence in Bandra and questioning the state of law and order.
Chief Minister Fadnavis, while acknowledging the unfortunate nature of the attack, maintained that Mumbai’s safety record should not be judged based on isolated incidents. He assured the public that the government is committed to enhancing safety measures. Saif Ali Khan is reportedly recovering from his injuries.
