Thu Jan 16 16:43:26 UTC 2025: ## New Bridge to Improve Connectivity in Thiruverkadu

**Chennai, January 17, 2025** – A new 300-meter bridge spanning the Cooum river in Thiruverkadu is nearing completion, promising improved connectivity for motorists and pedestrians alike. The ₹19.48 crore project, which includes ₹7 crore for land acquisition, features six spans, a 17-meter width, and dedicated cycle tracks and pedestrian pathways.

Construction, initiated in 2021, faced delays due to the lockdown and monsoon season. An engineer involved in the project explained the challenges of working around the river, including diverting water to facilitate construction. Final touches are now underway, including painting, electrical work, median landscaping, signage, and road markings.

Local residents and business owners express enthusiasm. M. Venkatesh, owner of a nearby wedding hall, highlights the improved access to several important temples in the area, previously requiring a 4km detour. He expressed hope for proper maintenance and nighttime lighting.

The bridge replaces a low-level causeway prone to flooding, accommodating the significant pedestrian and cyclist traffic in the area – an estimated 250 bicycles and 500-600 pedestrians during peak hours. The project is expected to significantly reduce travel times and enhance accessibility for the Thiruverkadu community.
