**Washington, D.C. –** A federal judge has partially cleared the way for the public release of the Justice Department’s investigative report on President-elect Donald Trump’s alleged attempts to interfere with the 2020 election. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon ruled Monday that the portion of the report detailing the election interference case can be released, but a temporary injunction delaying release remains in effect until Tuesday.
The ruling comes just days before Trump’s scheduled inauguration. However, the legal battle is far from over, as Trump’s defense lawyers could appeal the decision all the way to the Supreme Court.
Judge Cannon simultaneously blocked the immediate release of a separate section of the report concerning Trump’s handling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. This decision followed arguments from lawyers representing Trump’s co-defendants, Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira, who claimed that releasing this information would prejudice their ongoing criminal cases. While the Justice Department initially offered to share this portion with select congressional officials privately, Judge Cannon scheduled a hearing for Friday to determine whether this is permissible.
The judge emphasized that releasing the classified documents section would violate the fair trial rights of Nauta and De Oliveira. Special Counsel Jack Smith, who oversaw the investigation, resigned on Friday after submitting his report to Attorney General Merrick Garland.
The partial release of the report could reveal further details about Trump’s actions leading up to the January 6th, 2021 Capitol insurrection. The ongoing legal wrangling highlights the intense political and legal ramifications surrounding the investigation’s findings.
