Wed Jan 15 23:39:57 UTC 2025: ## Gaza Ceasefire Deal Reached, but Details Still Unclear

**Jerusalem, January 16, 2025** – A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, brokered by the United States and Qatar, has been announced, bringing a potential end to the devastating 15-month war in Gaza. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has cautioned that the deal is not yet finalized, with key details still under negotiation.

The agreement, which is expected to be approved by Israel’s Cabinet, involves a three-phase process. Phase one, beginning Sunday, includes a six-week pause in hostilities, the release of 33 hostages (mostly women, elderly, and wounded), and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from densely populated Gaza areas. This phase also allows for a surge in humanitarian aid.

Phase two will involve negotiations beginning 16 days into the ceasefire, aiming for the release of all remaining living hostages and a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. This phase, however, is contingent on both sides meeting certain conditions, with Israel insisting on the elimination of Hamas’ military capabilities and Hamas demanding the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops before releasing the final hostages.

Phase three will focus on the return of the bodies of deceased hostages and the long-term reconstruction of war-torn Gaza.

While jubilant Palestinians celebrated the news in Gaza, the death toll from the conflict remains staggering, with over 46,000 Palestinians killed, according to Gaza health authorities. Israel also suffered significant losses, with approximately 1,200 people killed and around 250 abducted in the initial Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Estimates suggest that a third of the remaining hostages may be deceased.

Netanyahu’s statement emphasizes the ongoing negotiations regarding final details, hinting at potential hurdles before the ceasefire becomes fully effective. The agreement’s ultimate success hinges on the successful completion of all three phases and the cooperation of both sides.
