**GAZA CITY/JERUSALEM** – A three-phase ceasefire agreement, brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, has brought an end to 15 months of devastating conflict between Israel and Hamas. The deal, approved by Hamas but facing internal political challenges within the Israeli government, promises a surge in humanitarian aid, the phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and a prisoner exchange.
The agreement, beginning Sunday, will see the release of Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Initial releases are expected within the first few days, alongside the commencement of a significant increase in humanitarian aid – up to 600 trucks daily – to alleviate the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where over 60% of buildings have been damaged or destroyed. Internally displaced Palestinians will be allowed to gradually return to their homes in northern Gaza over the next few weeks.
However, the fragile peace is already facing challenges. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed Hamas for a “last-minute crisis” delaying the Israeli cabinet’s approval, highlighting internal political divisions. Furthermore, skepticism remains, fueled by Israel’s history of ceasefire violations and concerns regarding the deal’s enforcement. Al Jazeera reports that, despite the ceasefire announcement, at least 80 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli air raids since Wednesday.
The three-phase agreement outlines a phased Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, with the first phase concluding on day 22. By then, approximately 33 Israeli captives are slated for release in exchange for 100 Palestinian prisoners. The subsequent phases will involve the release of the remaining Israeli captives and a complete Israeli withdrawal in exchange for further Palestinian prisoner releases. A multi-year reconstruction plan for Gaza is also part of the deal, pending the successful completion of earlier stages.
While the agreement offers a glimmer of hope for the 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza, fears remain regarding its implementation. Relatives of Israeli hostages express cautious optimism, while Gazans express a mix of relief and apprehension. The long-term administration of Gaza post-ceasefire remains unresolved, with the US advocating for a reformed Palestinian Authority to take control. The future remains uncertain, but the ceasefire marks a significant turning point in this protracted conflict.
