Thu Jan 16 13:57:59 UTC 2025: ## Delhi Air Quality Plunges, Stage 4 Pollution Curbs Imposed

**New Delhi, January 15, 2025** – A severe air pollution crisis has gripped Delhi-NCR, prompting authorities to implement the most stringent measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). The air quality index (AQI) soared from 275 on Tuesday to 396 on Wednesday evening, driven by a combination of unfavorable weather conditions – calm winds, low temperatures, and thick fog – and pollution sources. The India Meteorological Department and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology predict the AQI may soon exceed 400.

In response, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) immediately activated all restrictions under stages 3 and 4 of the GRAP. These measures include a complete ban on construction activities, a prohibition on non-essential polluting trucks entering Delhi, and a mandatory shift to hybrid learning for all schools except classes 10 and 12. Non-essential diesel trucks are barred from entry, and Delhi-registered BS-IV and older diesel heavy goods vehicles are also banned, with exceptions for essential services.

The GRAP categorizes air quality into four stages, with Stage 4 representing the most severe level (AQI above 450). The deteriorating air quality is attributed to a confluence of factors including vehicle emissions, stubble burning, firecrackers, and other local pollution sources. The situation highlights the ongoing challenge of managing air pollution in the Delhi-NCR region during winter months.
