**Chennai, January 16, 2025** – The annual Chennai Sangamam-Namma Oor Thiruvizha cultural festival captivated audiences across the city yesterday. Eighteen venues showcased a vibrant array of Tamil Nadu’s folk arts, including traditional dances like Ghoomar, Devarattam, Therukoothu, and Irai Nadanam, along with captivating musical performances like Naiyandi Melam Karagam.
Large crowds gathered at locations such as Natesan Park in T. Nagar to witness performances by artistes from across the state, including a Rajasthan Ghoomar troupe. One attendee, Pandiaraja S., expressed his delight at experiencing these traditional performances in Chennai. The festival also featured food stalls offering a diverse range of cuisines.
Ramanathapuram Sathya, a fourth-generation artiste leading a Karagam performance in Nungambakkam, highlighted the importance of preserving these art forms. Families attending the festival praised the initiative for exposing younger generations to the state’s rich cultural heritage.
P. Sampoornam, the nodal officer overseeing the Nungambakkam venue, emphasized the dual purpose of the festival: supporting the artistes and promoting awareness of Tamil Nadu’s diverse folk traditions.
