**New Delhi** – The upcoming Delhi Assembly elections are heating up, with a high-stakes battle brewing between incumbent Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal (AAP) and BJP challenger Parvesh Verma for the New Delhi seat. Both candidates have filed their nomination papers, revealing stark contrasts in their financial declarations.
Kejriwal, facing allegations in the Delhi liquor policy scam, reported a significantly lower income compared to his opponent. His affidavit shows a declared income ranging from ₹1.57 lakh to ₹44.9 lakh over the past five years, with his primary income source being his MLA salary. He declared ₹40,000 in cash, ₹2.8 lakh in a bank account, and a plot of land in Ghaziabad valued at ₹1.7 crore. He also disclosed 14 pending criminal cases, including those related to the liquor scam and defamation suits. His wife, a retired government employee, reported a higher income and significant assets, including a car, mutual funds, and gold and silver.
In stark contrast, Verma’s affidavit revealed a significantly higher income of ₹19.68 crore for FY2023/24. He reported substantial assets, including movable assets worth ₹77.89 crore, immovable assets worth ₹12.96 crore, and liabilities of ₹62.83 crore. His assets include three luxury cars, shares, and term deposits. His wife and children also reported considerable assets and liabilities. Verma faces one criminal case.
The contrasting financial declarations of the two candidates are sure to fuel debate in the lead-up to the election. The significant disparity in their reported wealth highlights a key point of contention in the campaign, with the AAP highlighting what they see as the disconnect between the BJP and the common man and the BJP likely pointing to Kejriwal’s alleged involvement in the liquor scam. The upcoming election promises to be a fierce contest between these two high-profile figures.
