Thu Jan 16 12:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Djokovic Eyes History at Australian Open, Surpasses Federer’s Record
**Melbourne, Australia** – Novak Djokovic is on the verge of making history at the Australian Open. The 37-year-old Serbian star, already the oldest man to reach the third round, is bidding to become the oldest player in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam title. His victory in the second round against qualifier Jaime Faria – a hard-fought 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-2 match – saw him surpass Roger Federer’s record for most Grand Slam singles matches played, reaching a milestone 430 matches. This win also makes him the first man over 30 to achieve 150 Grand Slam singles victories.
Djokovic, currently the seventh seed and coached by Andy Murray, next faces Czech 26th seed Tomas Machac. A win in Melbourne would secure his 25th Grand Slam singles title, surpassing Margaret Court’s record.
Elsewhere in the men’s draw, there were notable upsets. Sixth seed Casper Ruud lost to 19-year-old Czech Jakub Mensik, and 18-year-old Brazilian qualifier Joao Fonseca defeated ninth seed Andrey Rublev. These two teenagers are the first to defeat top-10 opponents at the same Grand Slam since Djokovic and Murray at Wimbledon in 2006. Second seed Alexander Zverev advanced, securing a third-round clash with Britain’s Jacob Fearnley.
