Mumbai, India – Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was stabbed six times during a home invasion early Thursday morning at his Bandra West residence. The attack, which left Khan with spinal cord injuries, also resulted in injuries to a nurse and a maid.
Police sources revealed that the attacker, who is still at large, demanded a ransom of Rs 1 crore (approximately $120,000 USD). The intruder, seen on CCTV footage entering the building, first targeted the room of Khan’s four-year-old son, Jehangir. The nurse, Eliyama Phillipes, who had been awakened by noises, confronted the assailant, leading to a struggle during which Khan intervened.
Khan, 54, was rushed to Lilavati Hospital by his son Ibrahim in an auto-rickshaw after their car was delayed. Doctors report his condition is now stable, though he suffered severe injuries to his thoracic spinal cord, as well as wounds to his hand and neck. Phillipes sustained injuries to her wrists and hands, and a maid, Geeta, was also injured.
The incident has sparked outrage and raised questions about security at the high-rise building. Police have registered a case under sections of robbery, trespassing, and grievous hurt. The lack of immediate arrest and the ease of access for the intruder have drawn criticism, with political figures engaging in a predictable blame game.
While Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the attack “unfortunate” and denied claims of Mumbai being unsafe, opposition figures like Shiv Sena leader Priyanka Chaturvedi questioned the safety of citizens if celebrities are vulnerable. Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also criticized the BJP-led state government. The investigation continues.
