Thu Jan 16 13:08:06 UTC 2025: **Modi Government Approves 8th Pay Commission for Central Employees, Promising Significant Salary Hikes**

NEW DELHI – The Narendra Modi government has announced the approval of the 8th Pay Commission, bringing significant salary increases for central government employees. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made the announcement on Thursday, January 16th. The implementation of the 8th Pay Commission’s recommendations is expected to lead to substantial increases in salaries, dearness allowance (DA), and other allowances.

While specifics are pending the commission’s final recommendations, it’s anticipated that the implementation will involve a high fitment factor, potentially around 2.86 (compared to the 2.57 used in the 7th Pay Commission). This factor is crucial in calculating salary revisions across different pay levels. It is speculated that the minimum basic salary of ₹18,000 (currently for Level 1 employees) could potentially double. Pensioners are also expected to see considerable pension increases.

The recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission are projected to be implemented from 2026, coinciding with the expiration of the 7th Pay Commission’s ten-year tenure. The entire process, from the formation of the commission to the submission of its recommendations to the government, is estimated to take around 18 months. It is important to note that the government is not obligated to adopt the commission’s recommendations verbatim; modifications are possible.
