Wed Jan 15 23:23:45 UTC 2025: ## Millions Take Holy Dip on Second Day of Prayagraj Kumbh Mela

**Prayagraj, India** – The second day of the Prayagraj Kumbh Mela, a massive religious gathering, saw millions of devotees flocking to the Sangam confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers for the auspicious “Amrit Snan” (holy dip). The first “Shahi Snan” (royal bath), considered particularly sacred, took place on January 14th, marking the beginning of the main bathing events.

Authorities reported an unprecedented turnout, with estimates exceeding 35 million devotees participating in the first day’s rituals alone. The Uttar Pradesh government deployed over 60,000 security personnel, including PAC, mounted police, and paramilitary forces, to manage the enormous crowds and ensure a safe and peaceful environment. The presence of Naga Sadhus (naked ascetics) further added to the spectacle.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath lauded the smooth conduct of the event, highlighting the blend of tradition and modernity in the mela’s organization. He praised the robust security measures and improved facilities for pilgrims. A government statement praised the successful management of the massive crowds and the overall smooth organization of the Kumbh Mela.

Despite the massive turnout, the event has not been without incident. A young man was arrested near a saint’s camp for suspicious activity, and an FIR was filed against another individual for spreading false information about deaths at the mela on social media.

The Kumbh Mela, occurring once every 144 years, is considered highly significant in Hindu astrology. It is believed that bathing in the Sangam on this day washes away sins from past and present lives, and brings peace to the souls of ancestors.

The event, which runs from January 13th to February 26th, has also attracted considerable international attention. Foreign devotees have joined the throngs of Indian pilgrims, emphasizing the global appeal of the Hindu faith. The mela has seen everything from helicopter flower showers to a Google doodle celebrating the event. Reports highlight increased costs for pilgrims, with tent rentals and sanitation facilities becoming more expensive compared to previous Kumbh Melas.

While the overall atmosphere is one of devotion and celebration, authorities remain vigilant, utilizing technology such as underwater drones to monitor the Sangam and ensure the safety and security of all participants. The Prayagraj Kumbh Mela, a testament to India’s rich cultural heritage and religious devotion, continues to draw massive crowds for the duration of the festival.
