Wed Jan 15 14:08:11 UTC 2025: ## Trump’s Defense Nominee Stumbles on Basic Geopolitics During Senate Hearing

**Washington D.C.** – President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, faced a rocky start to his confirmation hearing on Tuesday after demonstrating a significant lack of knowledge about the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). During a four-hour Senate hearing, Senator Tammy Duckworth, whose mother is Thai, questioned Hegseth’s qualifications, highlighting his inability to name even one member state of ASEAN or state the number of countries within the bloc.

When asked about the importance of ASEAN nations and US agreements with them, Hegseth responded by mentioning South Korea, Japan, and Australia – none of which are ASEAN members. Senator Duckworth pointed out this error, advising him to do his homework before future negotiations. ASEAN comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Hegseth’s lack of geographical knowledge fueled criticism from Democrats and sparked a debate on social media. While some condemned his lack of awareness of a key regional alliance, others defended him, arguing that a focus on military alliances supersedes knowledge of political and economic organizations like ASEAN.

Beyond his geographical shortcomings, Hegseth also faced questioning regarding accusations of sexual assault, infidelity, and workplace misconduct. The Army National Guard veteran, lacking diplomatic or administrative experience, is vying to lead the Department of Defense, overseeing a $849 billion budget and three million employees. His confirmation remains uncertain given the concerns raised during the hearing.
