**Madurai, Tamil Nadu, January 14, 2025** – The Avaniapuram Jallikattu event in Madurai, a highlight of the Pongal festival, concluded with one death and 75 injuries among the participants. Despite comprehensive safety measures, bull tamer B. Naveen Kumar, 22, succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH). Thirty participants sustained multiple injuries, while 45 suffered minor injuries. Five of the 736 participating bulls also received minor injuries.
The event, which saw 620 bull tamers compete across eleven rounds, was largely incident-free according to police, thanks to a significant police presence, readily available medical support including a mobile X-ray unit and an ATLS unit, and assistance from the Indian Red Cross Society and Animal Husbandry Department officials. Ambulances and fire engines were also stationed at the venue, and a team of doctors from GRH and the district headquarters hospital were on duty.
Despite the tragedy, the competitive spirit remained high. Karthik secured first place after taming 19 bulls, winning a car, a cow, and a calf. Divakar came in second, taming 15 bulls and receiving a motorbike. Prizes were also awarded to the bulls that performed best, with one bull winning a tractor, cow, and calf for staying in the arena for 60 seconds. Tamil Nadu ministers P. Moorthy and P.T.R.
