**New Delhi, January 15, 2025** – After 47 years, the Indian National Congress has vacated its iconic headquarters at 24, Akbar Road, a Lutyens’ Delhi bungalow steeped in history. The party relocated to its new, modern office, Indira Gandhi Bhawan, on Kotla Road.
The Akbar Road bungalow, once home to figures like Sir Reginald Maxwell and a young Aung San Suu Kyi, served as the Congress headquarters since 1978. It witnessed pivotal moments in Indian politics, including the party’s navigation through the post-Emergency period and numerous electoral victories and defeats. The building’s rich history is documented in Rasheed Kidwai’s book, “24 Akbar Road.”
While party members acknowledge the need for a more modern and spacious facility, the move marks the end of an era, severing ties with a location that holds deep emotional significance for many Congress veterans. The new Indira Gandhi Bhawan, however, represents the party’s commitment to its continuing mission. Sonia Gandhi inaugurated the new headquarters alongside Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi.
