**Tehran, Iran** – Iran’s military has unveiled a new advanced reconnaissance ship, the Zagros, as part of large-scale nationwide military exercises focused on protecting the country’s nuclear facilities. The drills, involving both the Iranian army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), are scheduled to continue until mid-March.
The Zagros, Iran’s first signals intelligence vessel, is equipped with sophisticated electronic sensors, interceptors, and cyber and intelligence capabilities. Navy chief Admiral Shahram Irani described the ship as a “watchful eye” for the Iranian Navy.
The timing of the ship’s launch and the military exercises coincides with heightened international scrutiny of Iran’s nuclear program. These exercises come shortly after reports emerged suggesting the Biden administration considered military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. While Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only, the country has recently increased uranium enrichment to 60 percent – a level significantly closer to weapons-grade material. This escalation, coupled with the ongoing military drills, has raised concerns among international observers.
The exercises also coincide with the anniversary of the US withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal under the Trump administration, a period marked by increased tensions and the assassination of IRGC General Qasem Soleimani. The current situation underscores the continued complexities and high stakes surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and regional security.
