**MUMBAI, INDIA** – Indian stock markets experienced a sharp downturn on Monday, marking the fourth consecutive day of losses. The benchmark Sensex and Nifty indices fell by 1.21% and 1.4% respectively, while midcap and smallcap stocks suffered even steeper declines, plummeting by 4% each. This significant drop has sent shockwaves through retail investors.
Analysts attribute the market weakness to several factors, including a strong US dollar, foreign institutional investor (FPI) outflows, concerns over US policies, and disappointing earnings projections. The BSE Smallcap and Midcap indices are now down 13-14% from their one-year highs, and the Sensex is 11% below its 52-week high.
Prabhudas Lilladher’s Amnish Aggarwal cited a downgrade cycle for the Nifty since Q1FY25, driven by reduced earnings per share (EPS) estimates. He points to a slowing economy, hampered by decreased government capital expenditure, weak consumer demand due to prolonged rains and high food inflation, and the potential for increased government spending on social programs that could crowd out capital investments and impact fiscal discipline. The narrowing gap between Indian and US government bond yields also contributes to currency volatility, limiting the Reserve Bank of India’s ability to cut interest rates aggressively. Aggarwal highlighted the upcoming budget and potential US policy shifts as key factors influencing future market performance.
Emkay Global Financial Services anticipates a weak market in Q1CY25, with stabilization expected from Q2 onwards as earnings improve and FPI selling subsides. They maintain their Nifty target at 25,000 and expect small and mid-cap stocks (SMIDs) to outperform later in the year. Prabhudas Lilladher has a slightly more conservative Nifty target of 27,172. Kotak Institutional Equities expresses pessimism, suggesting FPIs are unlikely to invest in emerging markets soon, leading to continued redemptions and further pressure on retail investors. They predict further correction in midcap and small-cap stocks. The overall outlook remains uncertain, with the upcoming budget and global economic conditions playing crucial roles in determining the market’s future trajectory.
