Tue Jan 14 06:51:23 UTC 2025: **Sierra Leone Declares Public Health Emergency After Two Mpox Cases Confirmed**

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone – Sierra Leone has declared a public health emergency following the confirmation of two mpox cases. Health Minister Austin Demby announced the measure on Monday, citing the need for immediate action under the Public Health Act. The second case, a 21-year-old man who exhibited symptoms on January 6th, follows a first case reported last week. Neither patient had known contact with infected animals or other sick individuals, except for the first case, which involved limited travel within the country. Both individuals are currently receiving treatment in Freetown.

The government’s response includes increased border surveillance, expanded testing, and a national awareness campaign. Minister Demby emphasized the country’s preparedness, drawing on experience gained during the Ebola and COVID-19 outbreaks. He urged citizens to remain calm, stay informed, and report any suspected cases to health authorities. Mpox, also known as monkeypox, is a viral disease characterized by high fever and skin lesions. While historically concentrated in Central and West Africa, the virus spread globally in 2022, with cases confirmed in over 70 countries. Sierra Leone’s declaration comes as the African continent continues to grapple with a significant mpox outbreak.
