Mon Jan 13 20:30:00 UTC 2025: **Cowboys Part Ways with Head Coach Mike McCarthy**

FRISCO, TX – The Dallas Cowboys announced Monday that they will not renew the contract of head coach Mike McCarthy. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones cited mutual agreement as the reason for the separation, ending McCarthy’s five-year tenure with the team.

McCarthy, whose contract expired last week, leaves the Cowboys with a 49-35 regular season record, the fourth-best winning percentage in franchise history. However, his playoff record proved less successful, with only one postseason victory amidst two devastating home losses in the wild-card round. The team’s disappointing 7-10 finish in the 2024 season played a significant role in the decision.

“Over the past week, Mike and I had the opportunity to conduct a joint review…and also spent considerable time discussing the road forward for the team,” Jones said in a statement. “Prior to reaching the point of contract negotiations, though, it became mutually clear that it would be better for each of us to head in a different direction.”

The Cowboys’ struggles in 2024 included a significant drop in offensive performance, a 2-7 home record, and a season marred by injuries to key players like quarterback Dak Prescott and several star defenders. While the team initially performed well, a five-game losing streak sealed their fate.

The Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints are reportedly interested in McCarthy’s services. The Cowboys will immediately begin their search for a new head coach, marking Jones’ ninth such hire since 1989. The franchise is seeking a coach to finally end their long Super Bowl drought.
