Mon Jan 13 19:50:10 UTC 2025: ## Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 Opens in Prayagraj Amidst Festivities and Controversy

**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India** – The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, commenced in Prayagraj on Monday, drawing millions of devotees to the sacred Triveni Sangam – the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers. The 45-day event, starting on Paush Purnima, is marked by the “Shahi Snan,” a ceremonial royal bath, witnessed by an estimated 10 million pilgrims on its first day.

The event, promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath as the “Maha Kumbh of Unity,” saw the hashtag #ekta_ka_maha_kumbh trending on social media. However, the festivities were overshadowed by accusations from Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, who criticized the Uttar Pradesh government for allegedly neglecting the concerns of boatmen vital to the Mela’s operations. These accusations were denied by UP Minister Nand Gopal Gupta.

Despite the political undercurrent, the Mela’s massive scale is evident. The India Meteorological Department launched a dedicated webpage providing real-time weather updates for Prayagraj and surrounding areas. The Uttar Pradesh Police deployed over 10,000 personnel, including drones and mounted patrols, to manage the crowds and maintain order, successfully reuniting over 250 individuals separated from their families on the first day. The Indian Railways announced an extensive transportation plan, including 13,000 train services, to accommodate the expected 40-45 crore visitors. To further boost tourism, the price of helicopter rides over the Mela has been significantly reduced.

The economic impact of the Maha Kumbh is also substantial. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) estimates trade worth Rs 2 lakh crore (approximately $24 billion USD) during the event, with local hotels and lodging expected to generate around Rs 40,000 crore (approximately $4.8 billion USD).

While the Mela promises a grand spectacle of faith and culture, authorities continue to urge caution, with WhatsApp issuing warnings about fraudulent messages targeting pilgrims. The event will continue until February 26th.
