Tue Jan 14 17:52:45 UTC 2025: ## Millions Take Holy Dip at Mahakumbh 2025’s Opening Ceremony
**Prayagraj, India** – Despite bracing cold and dense fog, over one crore (10 million) devotees flocked to the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj on Tuesday for the first “Amrit Snan” of the Mahakumbh Mela 2025, marking the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti. The event, considered the largest gathering on earth, is expected to draw 45 crore (450 million) devotees over its duration.
The Uttar Pradesh government hailed the opening day as a resounding success, emphasizing the message of unity and “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family). Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath tweeted his greetings to the participants, highlighting the “uninterrupted-clean Triveni” for the holy bath.
Authorities deployed advanced technology, including AI tools, for crowd and traffic management, as well as underwater monitoring and firefighting, ensuring a largely peaceful event. However, one death was reported: former Solapur mayor Mahesh Kothe suffered a heart attack while taking a holy dip. A case was also filed against an individual for spreading false information about multiple deaths on social media.
To accommodate the massive influx of pilgrims, Air India announced daily flights between Delhi and Prayagraj from January 25th to February 28th. The Mahakumbh Mela 2025, a Poorna Kumbh, will continue until February 26th, with several more key “snan” (holy bath) dates scheduled. Devotees from across India and the globe, including a Japanese Yogmata and a Greek national, participated in the auspicious event, sharing their experiences and expressing gratitude for the opportunity. Sadhus from 13 akharas were among the first to take the holy dip, followed by millions of others, with rose petals showering down upon the crowd. Despite the cold weather and massive crowds, attendees described the atmosphere as peaceful and joyous, a testament to the spiritual significance of the event. Officials remain vigilant, monitoring the situation closely throughout the Mela.
