**Washington, D.C.** – A federal judge has partially blocked the release of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s report on investigations into Donald Trump, creating further delays in the already contentious process. While Judge Aileen Cannon allowed the release of the section detailing the investigation into Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election, she is temporarily halting the disclosure of the portion concerning the classified documents probe.
This decision comes after a last-minute request from Trump’s legal team to further delay the release. The team argued that the entire report should remain under wraps until a court hearing on Friday. Judge Cannon rejected this request, but maintained her block on the release of the classified documents section, citing a need for further briefing and a hearing on the matter before releasing it to Congress.
Attorney General Merrick Garland had planned to share the classified documents section with congressional leaders from both parties under a confidentiality agreement. However, Judge Cannon’s order prevents this limited disclosure, raising concerns about transparency in the investigations.
The Justice Department has a historical precedent of releasing such reports, even during a president’s time in office. This instance, however, has been marked by ongoing legal challenges from Trump and his allies, delaying the public release of Smith’s findings. Trump himself has described the investigations as “political persecution.”
Smith’s report covers two separate investigations: one focusing on Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, and the other investigating the mishandling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. While the election interference portion of the report is now slated for release, the classified documents section remains under a temporary injunction. The ongoing legal battles have cast a shadow over the transition of power, complicating the release of information that is typically made public. The Justice Department has not yet commented on the judge’s latest ruling.
