Tue Jan 14 04:35:36 UTC 2025: ## Goa Tourism Outperforms National Average Despite Challenges

**Panaji, Goa – January 14, 2025** – Goa’s tourism sector is thriving, exceeding the national average, according to Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte. Addressing a tourism stakeholder conclave on Monday, Mr. Khaunte dismissed reports of declining tourist numbers, highlighting the state’s resilience and adaptability in a competitive market.

While acknowledging challenges, including friction between locals and tourists in crowded areas like Baga and Calangute beaches, the Minister emphasized the government’s proactive approach. Issues such as waste management, public transport, and beach cleanliness are being addressed, he stated. The government is also working to mitigate concerns raised by social media influencers regarding tourist behavior. A meeting chaired by the Chief Minister will culminate in an action plan to tackle these issues.

Mr. Khaunte also addressed reports of some budget travelers disregarding local culture and rules. While acknowledging complaints about taxi services, he praised the traditional role of taxi drivers in attracting returning tourists. The government is focusing on educating visitors about respecting local customs and boundaries, aiming for sustainable tourism rather than simply maximizing visitor numbers. Mr. Khaunte explicitly stated that Goa does not aim to emulate the scale of tourism seen in countries like Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam.
