**Melbourne, Australia** – Novak Djokovic, aiming for a record 25th Grand Slam singles title, advanced to the second round of the Australian Open 2025 on Monday night, but not without a significant challenge. The ten-time Melbourne Park champion overcame 19-year-old American wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy in a four-set battle, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
Basavareddy, playing his first Grand Slam match after turning professional only last December, stunned Djokovic with a dominant first set, showcasing impressive shot-making and court coverage. The former Stanford University standout, who boasts an eye-catching return of serve and early ball-striking, broke Djokovic in the seventh game to take the opening set 6-4. Djokovic, playing with new coach Andy Murray courtside, admitted Basavareddy was the better player for the first set and a half.
However, physical problems, seemingly cramp in his left leg, hampered Basavareddy from the beginning of the third set, allowing Djokovic to seize control. The Serb broke early in the second, third, and fourth sets, ultimately securing the victory after nearly three hours.
Despite the loss, Basavareddy’s performance impressed Djokovic, who praised the youngster’s fighting spirit and complete game. Basavareddy’s rapid rise in the rankings, from 457 to 138 in 2024, speaks to his potential.
Djokovic also commented on the unique experience of having Murray, his longtime rival, coaching him from courtside. He described the advice as valuable and appreciated the different perspective.
