Mon Jan 13 21:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Biden Administration Announces $4 Billion in Student Loan Forgiveness

**Washington D.C.** – In a final act before leaving office, President Joe Biden announced the forgiveness of $4 billion in student loan debt for over 150,000 borrowers. This encompasses relief for individuals defrauded by their educational institutions, those with total and permanent disabilities, and public service workers.

The announcement details $465 million in loan cancellation for public servants, $2.5 billion for borrowers with total and permanent disabilities, and over $1.25 billion for those attending schools that engaged in fraudulent practices. This brings the total student loan debt forgiven under the Biden administration to over $183.6 billion for more than 5 million borrowers.

While the Supreme Court struck down a broader student loan forgiveness plan earlier this year, the administration has focused on expanding existing programs to provide relief. President Biden stated that his administration has forgiven more student loan debt than any previous administration. The White House emphasized its commitment to ensuring higher education remains accessible and does not hinder opportunities for the middle class.
