Tue Jan 14 06:14:40 UTC 2025: ## Banks to Observe Multiple Holidays in January, Stock Markets Remain Open
**NEW DELHI** – Indian banks will observe a total of 13 holidays in January 2025, a mix of national public holidays, regional festivals, and regular weekend closures, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
The most significant closure will affect many states on January 14th, in observance of Makar Sankranti, celebrated under various names across India (Khichdi, Pongal, Uttarayan, etc.). Banks in Gujarat, Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh will be closed that day. Additional regional holidays include Thiruvalluvar Day (January 15th) and Uzhavar Thirunal (January 16th) in Chennai; and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Jayanti and Veer Surendra Sai Jayanti (January 23rd) in Kolkata, Agartala, and Bhubaneswar. Regular closures include Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of the month.
Despite the widespread bank closures on January 14th, the Indian stock exchanges (BSE and NSE) will remain open for trading. This means that while many banks are closed for Makar Sankranti, the stock market will continue to operate as usual. January’s bank holidays also include New Year’s Day and Sri Guru Gobind Singh’s Birthday.
